Victory Over Sin

Don’t ever underestimate the power you have over Satan as a believer. He can’t make you do anything, he may try to exert his influence but ultimately you have  power to say NO to it!

Through the provision of God’s grace, you can walk in the victory that you have over sin!

“Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, according as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue”

(2 Peter 1:2–3)

So how can I walk in my victory over sin?

1) Learn & memorise scripture!

Allow scripture to become an extension of your life so that it can produce spiritual fruit. Scripture can & should be grafted in you!

Since this is all about victory > sin I recommend reading Romans 6 & 8. Soak these passages in and apply them daily to your life. As you make sure Romans 6 and Romans 8 is on your mind & heart you will bear the fruit of victory over sin.

2) Believe you’re dead to sin!

If you’re a believer you’re dead to sin!

God wants us to “reckon” ourselves to be dead to sin, which means to “count it to be so.” (Romans 6:1). You died to sin when you became a Christian.

DISCLAIMER:

This is NOT to say that you will never sin again in your life however it doesn’t define your identity which is now rooted in Christ! However as you grow in Christ you will notice that you’re not actively sinning like you would in the world! The level of sin should be decreasing as you realise the power you have in Christ!

When Christ was crucified, you were crucified with Him (Galatians 2:20 and Colossians 3:20) when He was buried, you were buried too (Romans 6:4) when He rose from the dead, you rose from the dead (Colossians 3:1).

You are not controlled by sins power anymore!  Believe it!

Stop giving the devil so much credit!

3) Rely on God’s power by relying on His Word to “carry you away” from temptation.

“bare . . [them] on eagles’ wings” (Exodus 19:4)

God carried the people of Israel to safety with his power, Jesus wants to do that today as well. God wants to carry you away from temptation and destruction “on eagles’ wings!

When you begin to get tempted Satan wants you to believe there’s nothing you can to stop yourself from giving in, that you’re powerless, that you should just succumb, that you’ve lost but it’s LIES!

He’s trash, stop listening to him!

When you feel like you’re about to be tempted begin to quote the living, active words of truth found in God’s Word (Hebrews 4:12, I Thessalonians 2:13, Romans 6 & Romans 8)

As you use the sword of the Spirit to battle against the wiles of the devil ( Ephesians 6:10–18), the temptation will lose its power and appeal, and God will carry you on eagles’ wings out of temptation’s reach.

4. Personalise the truths found in Romans 6.

To help you memorise the power scriptures in point 1, turn the words of Romans 6 into a first-person prayers!

Make it your declaration of truth:

“What shall I say then? Shall I continue in sin, that grace may abound? God, forbid it. How shall I, being dead to sin, live any longer therein? Don’t I know that when I was baptised into Jesus Christ I was baptised into His death?

You then:
identify the particular temptation that you are facing (makes it more personal!)

Rather than using the word sin as you speak God’s truths back to Him, name the specific temptation you are facing.

For example if it’s lust:

“What shall I say then? Shall I continue to lust, that grace may abound? God, forbid it! How shall I, being dead to lust, live any longer therein?

5. Make no provision for sinful desires.

Don’t entertain things that will cause you to trip up! If you’re still making provision for that particular temptation to be carried out, you are deceiving yourself. (I Corinthians 3:18.)

“Put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof” (Romans 13:14)

What does this mean?
Get rid of everything that will lead you to spiritual defeat!

E.g sensual music, friends who influence you to ignore or reject Jesus etc

6. Accountability – Pastors/Shepherds, Godly Friends etc

Ask the Lord to guide you to someone who is concerned for your spiritual growth – pastor/shepherd, a mature Christian friend, even your parents can help you etc

They can help you by checking in on your progress with your spiritual development. Tell them what your goals are and give them precise questions that they can use to hold you accountable.

For example, if you want to memorise scripture you may suggest that they ask you this question once a week:

Can I hear the Scripture you have memorized during the past week?

To hold you accountable to read the Bible daily, they might ask you this question:

What did you learn from your quiet time this morning?

7. Be obedient & sensitive to the Holy Spirit!

You must also walk in the Spirit to experience victory over sin.
Listen to the Holy Spirit!

Learn how to discern the promptings of God’s Spirit, which always will be in harmony with God’s Word.

Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would”

(Galatians 5:16–17)

As you listen & obey the Holy Spirit, God will give you grace to reject the works of the flesh.

You will also experience the fruit of the Spirit, which is “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, [and] temperance . . . . They that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lust. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit”

(Galatians 5:22–25)

Remember, through God’s power and by His mercy and grace, “nothing shall be impossible!” (Luke 1:37).

8. Pray

As believers in Jesus Christ, we have been invited to engage in a never ending dialogue with God.

As his children, God longs for us to make our requests known to him (Philippians 4:6). When we do this, we honor God’s power and glory by letting him reign over our lives, accomplishing his purposes for us.

When we pray not only against our sin, but against temptation to sin, we display a maturing humility.

In the  very act of praying, we engage more deeply in the fight. We fortify our souls against sin. We become more deeply invested. We resolve, by the Spirit, to hold to the truth and not “be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin” (Hebrews 3:13). We remind our hearts that the pleasures of sin are shallow and fleeting (Hebrews 11:25) while pleasure in God is deep and enduring (Psalm 16:11)

now…

WALK IN YOUR VICTORY

Prayer:
Thank you Jesus for your great victory over sin & death.  May my life today reflect this great victory, help me walk in it & acknowledge the great power that I have over sin even in my weakest moment when I’m doubting. I am victorious.
